Writing Group

ALL ABOUT WRITING

Please Note: This course is currently unavailable. This may change, however, over the 2023-24 academic year.

Our Writing course is a programme which runs at our local S4E 11+ Tuition centre in Stechford. This includes a weekly 2-hour tuition session, weekly homework and ongoing support and advice. This course will support pupils with Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar skills required in the KS2 and KS3 curriculum.

Our weekly group sessions provide children with a well-rounded education which supports their learning at school, and is designed for pupils in Years 4, 5, 6 and 7. Our goal is to ensure that pupils have the confidence to build on their creative mindset. We encourage pupils to experiment with writing, and to move beyond their normal styles and subjects, beyond their use of traditional structural, narrative and poetic forms, and we ask them to see where their writing takes them.

How a Writing session works:  A critical element to effective Creative Writing sessions is utilising a wide variety of sophisticated vocabulary. The easiest way we aim to implement this is to consider basic or easy words and think of higher-level synonyms for these words.

When a student is writing their piece of Creative Text, they are encouraged to use standard English forms which include a variety of sentence types. Editing and continuing a piece of text is vitally important, as this enhances a child’s stamina for writing across all genres. In addition to the writing sessions, pupils are prepared for the 11+ Independent Schools exams; this includes giving the pupils a specific title for the text. It also allows them time to plan and write their text within a time limit. Pupils are prepared for this and mock assessments are planned for to ensure that they have the stamina and creativity to be successful for this assessment.  Pupils work closely together to share ideas and experiences that build on their own capability to not only produce a great writing piece, but also recognise good writing from other pupils.

Homework: The homework usually involves pupils planning a writing piece which is then used in the main session to extend and bring new ideas to the table. Spelling and grammar activities are also issued to build upon basic foundation of creative writing.

Days/Times: Currently not offered. This may change and we will update the availability if we offer this course over the 2024-25 academic year.
